BMW Australia has announced that the M40i variant of the G29 Z4 will get a power hike for 2020. This exercise aligns the range topping roadster’s power output with fellow M Performance cars like the M340i xDrive, X3 M40i and X4 M40i.
As it stands, the Z4 M40i uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine which produces 250kW at 6,500 rpm and 500Nm of twist from 1,600 rpm. For 2020, the G29 will still be using the same B58 straight-six engine as before albeit with a higher state of tune.
The TwinPower Turbo lump now churns out 285kW and 500Nm. This means that the Z4 M40i accelerates from standstill to 100km/h in 4.1 seconds which is an improvement of four tenths of a second over the previous car.
The power figure may have gone up but the Z4 roadster’s price has not, says BMW Australia. The M40i has a drive-away sticker price of $124,900. But if that’s too rich for your blood, the entry point to the range starts from $84,900. The Z4 sDrive20i features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 145kW and 320Nm and can even be optioned with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Sitting above the sDrive20i is the sDrive30i which is priced from $104,900 and uses the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo mill as the 20i but is tuned to deliver 190kW and 400Nm. No changes have been announced for both these variants.
The updated M40i will arrive in local BMW dealerships by Q1 2020.
