While Tesla is hardly out of the woods when it comes to ongoing production issues surrounding its Model 3 compact saloon, it seems that the company isn’t slowing down insofar as developing all-new products. The Tesla Pickup is perhaps one of the most hotly-anticipated new models from the marque, and CEO Elon Musk has dropped some pretty salient details on the new ute.
For starters, Musk confirmed that the Pickup would sport a dual-motor setup, giving it all-wheel drive capabilities. Further, because it’s all-electric, “crazy torque” is a given, though the estimated range of between 644km and 805km (if not “even more”) is definitely beyond our expectations.
Musk also confirmed in a series of other tweets that the pickup would come with “suspension that dynamically adjusts for load,” all of which will be available as standard. Further, there’ll be a smattering of 240V heavy-duty power outlets on board, to ensure use of “heavy duty, high power tools in the field all day, no generator needed.” Neat stuff.
The Tesla ute will also come with a drivers seat “big enough to fit André the Giant,” a 360º parking camera (more a necessity than a luxury on something as big as what Tesla’s suggesting), the usual array of sensors that’ll enable Autopilot (though it’ll likely be a cost option), as well as a strong roof that will “exceed NHTSA safety standards, like the Model S.”
When the Tesla ute will arrive is still unclear. What we do know is that it’ll have to accommodate already-announced new Tesla models like the Semi and the Roadster, both of which are due in 2020-22. Also within that timeframe will be the arrival of the Model Y SUV, a crossover based on the Model 3 compact saloon that the EV company is still struggling to produce enough of.
