Maybe influenced by our visit to the Ferrari HQ in Maranello, Italy almost 12 months ago, we rate the Ferrari 458 the world’s most desirable car. Well ‘desire’ has taken a new turn with news of the Ferrari 458 Speciale.
Purists have dared to criticize the 458 because it’s not a V12 – power comes from a 425kW/540Nm 4.5-litre V8.
Boom! The Ferrari 458 Speciale employs an up-rated version of the glorious V8 with 445kW/540Nm. In the old language that’s 133 horsepower per litre- “The highest ever achieved by a roadgoing naturally aspirated engine,” according to Ferrari.
Part of that story is reduced weight – the Ferrari 458 Speciale tips the scales at 1290kgs (1525kgs for the regular 458.)
So zero to 100km/h you’re wondering? That would be an astonishing 3.0 seconds according to official figures (3.4 seconds for the standard 458). And the 458 Speciale is quick enough to lap the Fiorano test track in 1min23.5secs.
Behind that achievement are some technical changes, including a modified version of the SSC system (Side Slip Angle Control) and specially-developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. In fact Ferrari says the 458 Speciale has achieved its highest-ever lateral acceleration figure of 1.33g.
Styling changes are noticeable – the front-end scores a sharper look and there are larger vents in the bonnet. As well, there’s a new rear diffuser and twin exhaust pipes replace the standard three outlets.
The Ferrari 458 Italia also debuts the Italian marque’s new ‘Advanced Active Aerodynamics.’
