Ferrari has created yet another one-off, seen here in stunning detail posing in front off the Enzo Ferrari office in Fiorano and called SP38. Home appliance name aside, the car itself is absolutely stunning.
It’s based on the 488 GTB, quite obviously, and bears some resemblance to the limited edition J50. The work of Ferrari’s aptly named One-Off programme and the Ferrari Design Centre, it follows in the footsteps of the 458MM and unique but controversially styled SP 275 RW Competizione.
As usual, next to nothing was disclosed about the individual this project was commissioned by, but you can be sure that he or she must have dropped a dizzying amount of money for it. All Ferrari are willing to say is that it was one of their “most dedicated customers”, who promptly took the car for a series of hot laps around the circuit just behind where handover ceremony concluded.
The design team worked with few design inspirational reference points, resulting in a car they hoped would invite visual comparisons with the F40 LM and 308 GTB. The car’s silhouette has been altered to emphasise a more distinctive wedge shape, with more muscular wheel arches and a thinner pair of headlights to, apparently, give the car an air of potency and agility.
To our eyes, it looks very well balanced and very subtle with its expressions of implied aggression. The clean lines are minimal and give the car an almost futuristic look while the painted A-pillar, undulating belt line, and sculpted roof gives it an air of the Lancia Stratos. Lastly the wheels, with its reversely dished 10-spoke star pattern puts to mind the Ferrari F50.
Things get interesting at the rear end as well, where its 488 genetics are barely noticeable save for the dual exhaust exits sitting above the diffuser. At speed, a the small spoiler wing can extend from the rear flanks to improve downforce, and its integration into the bodywork is meant to be reminiscent of the fixed wing on the F40.
Mechanically, the car is identical to any standard 488 GTB, meaning its 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 produces 493kW at 8,000rpm and 760Nm from 3,000rpm. The F154CB motor is mated to a 7-speed Getrag dual clutch transmission and sends drive to the rear wheels.
The cabin, unsurprisingly, has been fully customised to the whims of the owner by Ferrari’s Tailor-Made division. Hopefully there will be some reveal of that when it makes it first public appearance at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como on 26th May 2018.
