“Ah, Morgan’s wooden tricycle,” Jeremy Clarkson remarked of the Morgan 3 Wheeler. After undergoing extensive changes to pass Australian Design Regulations back in 2015, it seems that continued revisions to the ADR will see the 3-wheeler deemed illegal for sale Down Under from November 2017 onward.
In a press statement, Morgan Cars Australia said that “further changes to the Australian Design Rules [mean that] the Morgan 3 Wheeler will no longer be eligible for registration in Australia effective 1st November 2017.” Those already on the waiting list need not worry, as any cars registered before that date needn't worry. Any interested parties who want to buy into this unique driving experience can get in their orders now, as production slots for the 3 Wheeler are booked until the end of May 2017.
For the keen few interested in a 3 Wheeler, the car has to be built, imported, and registered before the end of October 2017. To do that, their 3 Wheelers will need to complete production by the end of July. Order books for slots in June and July will be open until the end of this year, or until they're full. The 3-Wheeler starts at $93,900 before options and ORC. A $20,000 deposit will be required to book a production slot, with a further 35% of the retail price required two months before production begins.
Unique changes to the 3 Wheeler for the Australian market (due to ADR requirements) include a quieter induction system, a padded steering wheel and dashboard, repositioned indicators, additional warning lights, larger mirrors, collapsable steering column, and a wind deflector rather than a windscreen, all contributing to making the 3 Wheeler more of a car rather than a bike. Morgan Australia mentioned additionally that individually imported 3 Wheelers from Europe will not be deemed road worthy.
