….And they’re gone
Today marks the beginning of the end for the Ford Falcon as the final edition sings its throaty swansong to mark the end of its production run. Customers across Australia will be able to get their hands on last, and fastest, batch of Falcons today.
Bad news: all 1400 examples are already spoken for. With 500 units of XR6 Turbo Sprints and 750 units of the supercharged XR8s. The remaining 150 cars will reach buyers in New Zealand.
But let’s rejoice in knowing they will make their lucky owners happy. There’s the Falcon XR6 Turbo, which as its name betrays, is powered by a turbocharged 4.0-litre straight-6 engine churning out 325kW and 576Nm of torque.
Then we’re on to the Falcon XR8 “Sprint” editions, which packs a mighty supercharged 5.0-litre V8 with 345kW and 575Nm of torque. Mind you, the HSV GTS, these Ford’s closest rival, offer very similar levels of performance but costs roughly twice the money with the Falcon XR6 costing AU$54,990.
Ford has been pretty adamant about there not being any continuation of the Falcon past this point. Ford Australia’s Graeme Whickman said: “We want this to be a celebration of Ford. We’d rather have one order too many than one car left over.”
