Below the 63, but perhaps just as potent.

Mercedes-AMG ’53’ Hybrid Powertrains Coming Soon

Mercedes-Benz’s push toward electrification continues in its lineup, with the long-rumoured hybrid-AMG now confirmed to come in the form of the CLS 53. ’53’ was a number decided upon to ensure that the electrified model remains in keeping with existing Mercedes-AMG model nomenclature, but also to ensure enough room for higher 63 and lower 43 variants to coexist harmoniously.

The hybrid AMG powertrain was previously speculated to carry a ’50’ badge, though sources have confirmed to Autocar that the ’53’ number was decided upon to sit more comfortably in the lineup. Expected to use the same 3.0-litre inline-6 biturbo engines we’re familiar with from the ’43’ series models, but pairing them with a 50kW electric motor and a 48V electric architecture, bolstered by lithium-ion batteries.

While the CLS53 will be the first to feature an electrified powertrain and an AMG badge, it’s expected that the same powertrain will be pilfered and employed on the E-Class as well, a car that it has traditionally shared underpinnings with. Sources have suggested that the hybrid drivetrain may only be available with the E-Class coupé and cabriolet, with the bigger saloon and estate models sticking to the venerable V8.

The CLS53 may also take pride placement in the renewed CLS lineup, as while the existing CLS 63 S produces some 75kW more power, the electrified powertrain will endow the 53 with considerably more torque. While straight-six engines are all well and good, we must admit that we’re slightly sad to see what appears to be a step toward the eventual demise of the V8.
