And it brings Hybrid to the estate for the first time.
American carmaker Ford has announced that it’s updating its Mondeo, which seems almost like a move made in sympathy given the firm’s steady push & excitement towards its SUVs. While the sunset may be on the horizon for the one-favourite Mondeo, for 2019, it’s here to stay. And for the new model year, the consummate family saloon’s got a few tricks up its sleeves.
For starters, there are some aesthetic tweaks to help differentiate it from the older models. The grille details are now a little revised, and there are new alloy wheels to look at. There’s also a slightly reworked tail, featuring taillights that are split down the middle by a chrome element that spans the width of the boot. There are also new bumpers of course, with the front looking more aggressive and the rear looking more hunkered-down.
There are some more major changes under the skin. For starters, the engines have been revised (somewhat), with the TDCI diesel mill making way for a more advanced EcoBlue engine. Additionally, the Mondeo is now available with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, as well as adaptive cruise control (with traffic-jam assistant), as well as Intelligent Speed Limiter which works in conjunction with the speed sign detection system to adjust the cruise control speed and potentially save your license from suspension.
Additionally, while the saloon has been offered in hybrid guise in the past, the estate will now be offered with the petrol-electric hybrid system as well. Further smarts come from inside the cabin, where an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen running Sync3 is available, replete with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.
It’s worth noting that the Mondeo that’s been announced is for the European market, where they expect to get the mid-sized Ford on sale by March. With that in mind, we’re expected to see the Mondeo here in the second-quarter of this year. Closer to its local landing, we’ll bring you the specifics & details that Ford release as they come.
