Motorsport can often be a fair indication of where an automaker intends to take their future models in much the same way a prominent motor show can be a signpost to their upcoming models or an insight into their thinking.
Following that vein, Ford has been quite active in rally, and in particular the World Rally Championship where they field a heavily modified version of their Fiesta. For the 2017 car, however, the American automaker will be using their next-generation car as a base for the WRC machine.
As is very obvious in this video, the 2017 Fiesta RS WRC (being tested by driver Ott Tanak) is very fast and loud, with all the requisite aero components and widened track to give the all-wheel drive demon more purchase on the road. Next year’s regulations require a lighter minimum weight and a beefier air restrictor among others stipulations.
Trying to see beyond the WRC skin and piecing together a clearer picture of the all-new seventh-generation Fiesta is a little difficult especially with the thorough use of geometric pattern camouflage, along with the speed and the noise and new competition-grade bodywork.
However, some changes do peek through. Unfortunately, they’re not substantial enough to really be able to articulate without delving head first into the murky waters speculation. We do expect a revised engine line-up but an overall shape that’s more-or-less identical to the current Fiesta.
A revised front and rear, updated underpinnings, slightly lengthened wheelbase, and a throughly updated interior are all on the cards for Ford’s next small car.
