Chinese brand Foton has boosted the range of its hard-working Tunland one-tonne ute with the launch of single cab models priced from $24,990 ‘Driveaway’.
Boasting a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine from truck specialist Cummins, the longest cab-to-axle dimension of major utes (and hence the longest alloy tray body in the class – up to 2.73m) plus a well-appointed interior, the Tunland single cab represents a great opportunity for Foton to conquest sales from hard-working buyers like farmers and miners.
Specs are impressive for those buyers, not the least of which is Foton Tunland’s endorsed alloy tray with a 76mm tube headboard frame (many others use angle-al extrusion), laser-cut steel mesh tube-frame cab guard in either satin black or gunmetal, stiffer than usual dropsides and large spring-loaded over-centre anti-rattle latches in stainless and galvanised steel.
The other hard-working feature is that 2.8-litre Cummins turbo-diesel engine which, in 4x4 variants drives through a German Getrag five-speed manual transmission, Borg Warner transfer case and Dana axles and LSD. Maximum power is 120kW at 3600rpm and peak torque of 360Nm is delivered between 1800rpm-3000rpm. Combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 8.3l/100kms.
Lighter 4x2 models employ a different specification version of the same engine (96kW/280Nm) driving through a Japanese Aison-Rangshan five-speed manual transmission and Dana rear axle and LSD.
Stopping is handled by a Bosch system with four-channel ABS and EBD.
Inside are Johnson Controls USA seats (lumbar and height adjustment for the driver), dual airbags, air-conditioning, cruise control and carpeted floor and cab back wall.
