Power comes from a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 155kW and driving all four wheels via Mercedes’ 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission and 4MATIC system.

While strictly a concept the Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe is actually production-ready and is making a brief stopover at the Los Angeles Avant/Garde Diaries ahead of its official reveal in Beijing next week.

“The Concept Style Coupe is expressive and powerful in its design,” revealed Mercedes boss Dr Dieter Zetche. “We are staking our claim very clearly here. This is the model against which sporty vehicles in the executive segment will have to measure themselves in the future.”

Dimensions are 4637mm in length, 1891mm in width and 1398mm in height.

Clearly the front end is a radical departure for ‘Benz style. The bonnet features a ‘power dome’, the grille gets a diamond look, the sinister-looking headlights actually glow red and the turn indicators feature individual globes which light-up in succession loike the staging lights which start a drag race.

There are at least three bold contour lines down the sides, the side mirrors have a ripple effect and the 21-inch alloy wheels have a diamond theme like the grille. With frameless windows, the Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe has no B-pillars.

The roof is panoramic glass with a thick roll-bar type crossmember at the rear separating it from the rear window.

At the back is a diamond-look diffuser and sharp, pointed tail-lights.

Inside is extensive carbon fibre with tube-like instruments. Leather and suede give the expected Mercedes-Benz glamour for the four individual seats but with a twist – contrast stitching in neon green.
