And they’re doing it on the G70.
Genesis, that luxury marque from Hyundai that they simply will not give up on, has released a major tech upgrade for the brand that will likely be fitted to most if not all of their new cars going forwards. It’s an all-new, all-digital instrument cluster which doesn’t sound like much on the surface, until you realise that it’s a 3D cluster.
This is very much a world-first, and it’s something that we reckon mainstream manufacturers will jump on sooner or later, so we’re certainly surprised that Genesis is making the move first. So the 12.3-inch display sitting ahead of the driver, which is still very much a flat screen, now uses an eye-tracking ability to present the instruments in a way that provides depth in presentation.
Drivers can choose between Modern, Space Age, and Edge design themes for their 3D instrument cluster, or they can choose to switch it off if it’s too trippy.
The 3D cluster is part of a raft of updates that Genesis is throwing at its now-ageing G70 compact saloon, which includes a powered bootlid (they had to wait for a facelift?) an air purifier, and a high-definition digital media broadcast system, though that will likely remain on offer only in Korea. However, there is now an auto-hold handbrake, auto-coast function for the gearbox, and a new Dynamic All-Wheel Drive system with a mechanical limited-slip diff.
Aside from that it’s all business as usual for the G70, so you still get that very distinctive face (which is starting to look a bit like an Elantra to this writer), and a choice between a turbo-four petrol, a turbo-four diesel, or a biturbo-V6 petrol for motivation.
