Holden has followed parent company General Motors in announcing a recall of 9,547 Cruze models.
The recall involves some 1.4-litre petrol Cruze models built in 2012 and this year.
Holden will be contacting owners of the affected vehicles. The work will be undertaken free of charge and involves modification of the lower air deflector – only about 40 minutes is needed.
The local safety initiative follows a North American recall of Chevrolet Cruze vehicles to rectify a lower air deflector which, if not fitted properly after an oil change, can catch oil drips which could cause a fire if they come into contact with hot components like the exhaust manifold or catalytic converter.
While there have been no reports of such incidents in Australia or New Zealand, Holden has launched the local recall as a precaution.
“We believe Australia’s high standards of servicing procedures significantly reduce the risk of improper oil changes which almost eliminates the risk of a thermal incident,” explained Holden’s Craig Porritt.
