Great news for Holden – and the Australian automotive manufacturing sector – with confirmation of a new Commodore export program to North America.
A left-hand-drive high-performance derivative of the new VF Commodore will be sold State-side as the Chevrolet SS sedan from late next year. It will be the first rear-drive Chevrolet sedan sold in North America for 17 years.
And the Aussie-sourced Chevrolet will have a high profile as it will be Chevrolet’s vehicle in NASCAR racing starting with the Daytona 500.
Previously Holden exported the VE Commodore (as the Pontiac G8 to North America and currently sells the Caprice to North American Police Departments. Other Holden export markets are the Middle East and New Zealand.
Mark Reuss, GM’s North American chief said: “I am delighted to say that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that very closely links the performance sedan that will be available for sale. The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends well beyond the track and I am personally looking forward to driving it.”
