A host of politicians were the first to drive Holden’s range-extended Volt electric sedan in Sydney today – as Holden previewed the ground-breaking new model ahead of local sales from next year.
The Holden Volt is powered by GM’s Voltec propulsion system – a 111kW electric motor (lithium ion batteries) with a 1.4-litre, 63kW petrol engine to re-charge the batteries. Holden says the Volt has a pure electric range of around 80kms and the combined range adds-up to an impressive 500kms.
As a genuine five-seater with no ‘range-anxiety’, the Holden Volt takes electro-mobility to a much larger audience than say Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV.
“The Holden Volt can be the only vehicle you need to own,” revealed Holden chief Mike Devereux. “The Volt is a true game changer for Holden and the entire industry. It promises to revolutionize the way people view electric vehicles with its world-beating drivetrain, progressive styling and outstanding safety.”
During testing, GM engineers have logged more than 1.5 million kilometres (4,000 hours) of testing for Volt’s lithium ion battery packs. Delivering 368Nm of torque, the electric motor provides the Holden Volt with rapid acceleration and re-charging can be done (six-10 hours) though a conventional household outlet.
Affording a 2685mm wheelbase and tipping the scales at 1696kgs, the Holden Volt is a genuine mid-size four-door sedan, riding on 17-inch wheels and a MacPherson strut suspension.
