Ahead of the local introduction of the Chevrolet Camaro SS, freshly converted into right-hand drive by Holden Special Vehicles, the Melbourne-based company has now released pricing and more detailed specification info on the Ford Mustang GT rival.
We already know that upon its arrival, the car itself will be available via select Holden dealerships despite still wearing Chevrolet’s bow tie badge. Nonetheless, the Camaro 2SS that’s destined for Australian availability will be sold for $85,990, excluding on-road costs. That is substantially higher than the list price for the most highly specified equivalent from Ford AU.
This is to be expected, after all, as the Camaro’s conversion process from a left-hand drive configuration does not come cheaply or simply. Still, the novelty of having a 6.2-litre naturally aspirated LT1 V8 under your bonnet might we well worth it.
Power is on par with the smaller 5.0-litre Coyote V8 in the facelifted 6th-generation Mustang, but the LT1 does offer 60Nm more torque at peak than the Ford. For now, the Blue Oval’s muscle car does have the advantage of transmission choice, offering both a 6-speed manual and a 10-speed automatic. However, HSV has indicated that a three-pedal version of the Camaro 2SS is on the way following the initial batch of 550 units, but for now we’re saddled with an 8-speed automatic and shift paddles.
HSV has already said that a good chunk of that initial run are already spoken for, and the interest in the Camaro for Australian buyers is expected only to increase as these initial units roll out to pioneering customers.
Other than the sorted powertrain, the Camaro 2SS will also arrive with plenty of kit as standard (as it should for that asking price). Highlights include 20-inch alloys, front and rear Brembo brakes, a limited slip rear differential, bi-modal performance exhaust, sunroof, a 9-speaker Bose sound system, wireless phone charging, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, 7 airbags, and a rear view camera.
Autonomous Emergency Braking is, unfortunately, not included, nor is it optional at this point. No doubt Ford will want to emphasise this glaring omission.
