Because who needs SR models, right?
Korean marque Hyundai have revised their i30 offerings here in Australia, removing underperforming variants and rebranding them to stay in line with the brand’s global product strategy. With the increasing influence and acceptance of its ’N’ performance sub-brand (which notably began with the i30N), the brand has decided to inject a little N into its core lineup with the new i30 N-Line and i30 N-Line Premium.
Like the SR that N-Line replaces, the medium-heat i30 variants get the 150kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbo-petrol mill that sits atop the (core) i30 hierarchy, with peak torque deliverable from as low as 1500rpm.
N-Line models are differentiated by reprofiled front and rear bumpers, as well as 18-inch alloys in between. Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres were chosen to provide the grip, and N-Line badges dotted the place serve as icing on the cake.
Step inside and you notice things like the sports seats up front, and trim that looks a lot like carbon fibre (but really, really isn’t). There’s an N-Line spots steering wheel, gear knob, and black headliner, while there’s also an ’N’ stamped into the backrests of the front seats.
Dual-zone climate control, keyless entry & go, wireless smartphone charging, a 4.2-inch TFT info display, LED taillights, and multi-link rear suspension are all standard on the N-Line, whereas the N-Line Premium adds goodies like LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, Infinity audio, heated/ventilated front seats (with electric adjustment for the driver), dimming rear view mirror, and front parking sensors.
You also get Hyundai Auto Link as standard on the i30 N-Line, allowing you to check the status of your car, unlock it, and even switch the air conditioner on via a smartphone app.
A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard on the i30 N-Line, but you can option on a 7-speed DCT which is made standard on the i30 N-Line Premium. Automatic models get things like AEB, smart cruise control, and lane-keep assist, which are removed from manual models. This will be of particular note to young families, we think.
