All that power, and 15% more boot space. What’s not to like?
Korean marque Hyundai have confirmed that their N performance car lineup will soon double, with the i30N hatch to be joined by the i30N Fastback sometime in either March or April. With the same 202kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbo-4 in the front, the i30N Fastback promises to offer all the fun of the hatch, but in a far more practical bodystyle.
Details like price & specification haven’t been locked down, but its assumed that it’ll share much with the hatch. Interestingly, the i30N Fastback is only available with a six-speed manual globally – for now. There’s a dual-clutch automatic in the works, and we expect the DCT to come to fruition before the i30N Fastback lands in our market.
Where the i30N Fastback differs from its hatchback sibling is in the hind quarters, where the sloping tailgate has freed up a total of 450L of stuff, or 15% more than in the hatch. With the rear seats folded, you’ll have access to a pretty healthy 1351L, which should allow you to move house in a couple of trips.
We’re hitherto unsure if the i30N Fastback will sit above or at par with the hatch, but the kit on offer for the $39,990 the i30N hatch commands means the Fastback can’t be sparsely equipped. To recap, the hot hatch comes with kit like 19-inch alloys, sports seats, dual-zone climate control, launch control, variable exhaust, and Hyundai SmartSense (AEB, driver drowsiness monitoring, collision warning, lane-keep assist).
