Fans of Hyundai’s sportier but rather curious 2+1 hatch-coupe thingy, the Veloster, can celebrate the return of the model to the Australian line-up as the South Korean brand has detailed local pricing and specification for the second-generation car.
Due to kick off from $29,490 excluding on-road costs for a three tier range, the all-new Veloster will act as a funkier, possibly sportier alternative to the venerable i30, a car that, unsurprisingly, it shares quite a bit with under the skin.
Things start with the entry-level variant called, quite creatively, just Veloster. Here, buyers will have only one engine option, that being a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder that churns out 110kW and 180Nm and mated to either a 6-speed manual an automatic six.
Highlights of the standard equipment list include 18-inch alloys, Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, LED daytime running lights, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and a Driver Attention Monitor.
Hyundai Australia ensures that all Velosters, just like many models in the local range, benefits from market-specific suspension tuning to maximise the car’s factory components for the specific needs of our roads and conditions.
Stepping up a level will bring you to the first of a pair of more powerful Veloster varieties starting with the Turbo. As we’re used to seeing from Hyundai, and indeed even the previous generation model, is the 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four-pot that generates 150kW and 265Nm, mated to the same aforementioned manual six or a 7-speed dual-clutch.
While there isn’t much by way of visual enhancements besides a more aggressive bodykit and gloss black wheels shod in Pilot Sport 4 tyres, the extra performance and attached price tag of $35,490 delivers a more advanced radar-based AEB system, Blind Spot Monitoring, Adaptive Cruise Control, keyless entry and start, and LED headlights.
Inside, though, the Turbo receives a larger 8.0-inch infotainment system and a combination cloth/leather upholstery and trim, even paddle shifters should the dual-clutch auto be selected.
Finally, we come to the range-topping Veloster Turbo Premium which is takes the already well-specified Veloster Turbo and adds even fancier dark alloy wheels, fully leather upholstery alongside heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, and an in-built wireless smartphone charging pad.
