This Korean-market example should be close to the real-deal.
Hyundai has revealed in its home market the new Elantra SR Turbo, sort of. In South Korea, the Avante Sport has made an introduction, effectively previewing what we can expect when the Hyundai Elantra SR Turbo arrives on our shores at some point in the near future. Being the sportier model, it takes the new Elantra’s angular aesthetics and adds sportier bits and pieces around the place.
The exterior kicks off with a unique black mesh grille, new 18-inch alloys, larger brakes, a bodykit, and chromed twin exhausts. Beneath the skin lies a multilink rear suspension which, considering Albert Biermann’s involvement in Hyundai, has us thinking this could be a pretty decent steer.
Step inside and you’ll find the cursory carbon-fibre look trim around the place, as well as sports seats up front that can be trimmed in either black or red leather. Additionally, there’s also a perforated-leather flat-bottomed sports steering wheel too, which features paddle shifters behind it.
There wasn’t mention of driver-assistance or tech features on Hyundai’s Korean website, but we can probably expect to see the same smart safety technology (like AEB, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and so on) that we saw on the vanilla facelift model. Power for the Avante Sport comes from a 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-pot petrol mill, with 150kW and 265Nm on tap. All that grunt goes to the front wheels via either a 6-speed manual (fat chance of us getting that), or a 7-speed DCT auto.
With the Avante Sport already available in South Korea, the next market debut is expected in North America. We know already that the facelifted Hyundai Elantra will be making its Australian debut before the year us up, but it’s unclear if the Elantra SR Turbo will be making its debut here then too, or if we should expect to see it sometime after that.
