It’s now got 36% more range, which is alot.
Korean marque Hyundai has long held the title of offering Australia’s most affordable EV, in the form of the Ioniq EV. The 5-door zero-emissions hatchback was more a statement of intent for Hyundai to the masses, to show that it too was part of the green posse, with the Ioniq EV being the headlining green-mobile in the 3-up Ioniq family.
The battery pack is now 38.3kWh in capacity, up from the 28kWh that it used to get. On top of that, it now comes with a 7.2kW onboard charger that can work with Type 2 AC charging ports. So equipped, the Ioniq EV can juice up from flat to 80% in just 54-minutes, while performance figures are now rated at 92kW and 295Nm.
The new Ioniq EV also benefits from the new ‘Blue Link’ connected-car system, which allows Ioniq EV owners to remotely start, lock, check battery level, and preset the climate control of their car via the Hyundai Blue Link smartphone application. The new car also adopts eCall (an emergency-services contact program), as well as a free 5-year subscription for live traffic updates for the built-in satellite navigation.
On that, cabin infotainment is provided for by a 10.25-inch touchscreen, highlighted by ambient lighting, while the exterior features updated front & rear bumpers, reprofiled headlights & taillights, and a new grille design that’s broadly similar to the outgoing car but made ever so slightly sharper for the 2019 model year.
It has not yet been determined when the new Ioniq hatch will be arriving on Australian shores, but we can reasonably expect it here hopefully before year end. We also have’t yet reached out to Hyundai Australia but when we do and when we get a response, we’ll tell you first.
