Hyundai has an all-new Veloster, which by this point should be just anxiously waiting in the wings for its official debut and launch, probably struggling to find ways to pass the time. Meanwhile, the South Korean automaker has taken to fitting a whole bunch of LEDs on one for this new teaser.
By now, we have a pretty good idea what this new car looks like - which is to say, like an i30 reversed hard into the original Veloster. Through this lens, it’s natural for Hyundai’s promotional team to be scratching their heads to try and tease a car that doesn’t have a lot left to reveal. And instead of showcasing its still-mysterious interior, they’ve landed on this brief light show (because….Christmas).
While the spectacle itself is impressive, as we imagine the underlying technical solutions involved to have it realised, the new Veloster’s side profile is admittedly not one of its most flattering of sides, especially from the perspective of this shot-from-the-hip wide shot.
We’ve no doubt that this new model fixes many of the criticism of the original car’s exterior, merging it with the brand’s most current design language. Examining the video footage once again emphasises the larger cabin, evidenced by the larger windows and slightly more tapered roof angle.
This left-hand drive unit still bears its signature asymmetrical door configuration with an extra one swinging out of the passenger side, with more pronounced rear haunches to further aid the illusion of being a true 3-door hatch.
Expect it to also drive in a manner more hot hatch-like compared to the first generation car, with ample input from Hyundai’s newly minted N performance division responsible for the excellently sorted i30 N. Predicting that both cars would handle very similarly is most reasonable.
Under the bonnet, power will arrive at its front wheels from a variety of Hyundai’s T-GDi turbo-petrol engines, with a possible range-topping variant sharing the 2.0-litre unit with 202kW and 353Nm from the i30 N. Buyers will likely also have either a 6-speed manual or dual-clutch automatic to choose from.
