Do you think a ute is sometimes just not enough? Does your daily commute include driving over a mountain, or navigating rutted terrain that would leave lesser vehicles stuck? Or do you just like towering over other people in a car that is entirely capable of going anywhere it wants to, including the nearest Woolsworth? Then maybe, just maybe, you need an Isuzu D-Max Arctic Trucks AT35.
The AT35s are a new generation of utes that have been given a once-over by specialists, and see them kitted out to the point of no return. Before the modifications, each AT35 starts out life as a standard production Isuzu D-Max ute, powered by a minuscule 1.9-litre turbodiesel capable of 121kW and 360Nm, mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. Despite the small engine, the D-Max is still capable of towing up to 3.5-tonnes and carrying a 1-tonne payload.
From there, the changes begin. The AT35 sits some 55mm higher than the standard ute, with a total ground clearance of 290mm. Thanks to the improved height, the special edition enjoys a 36-degree approach angle, a 24-degree departure angle, and a 32-degree ramp-up angle.
Naturally, a set of bespoke tyres help put power down, with the 17x10-inch ‘AT’ alloys fitted with super 315mm-wide, 70-aspect all-terrain Nokian Rotiiva rubber. The wheels themselves are housed in special flared wheel arch extensions, which sit alongside other bespoke design details like chrome ‘AT’ badging and decals, as well as ‘Arctic Trucks’ mudflaps.
Like every Isuzu D-Max, the AT35 special edition is well equipped as standard. All cars get things like keyless entry and go, a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system, GPS satellite navigation, DAB+ digital radio, as well as support for smartphone mirroring from Android and Apple. Windows are tinted out of the factory, tailgate dampers are fitted, and the seats get unique ‘Arctic Trucks’ embroidery on the headrests and floor mats.
The AT35 will be hitting the streets (and shortly after, a mountainside) in the UK come October, with a retail price of just under £38,000 (or roughly $61,000). Unfortunately, the Arctic Trucks AT35 special edition will not be making it to our shores, as Isuzu Ute Australia has spoken to some media outlets that there are “no plans to introduce” the model to our market.
