Range anxiety assuaged, thanks.

If someone had said ten years ago that in 2018 the two leading lights in the world of electric vehicles would be an American brand and Jaguar, we’d likely have laughed. But despite having a clear winner on its hands in the I-Pace, Jaguar’s still dealing with plenty of customers who are hesitant about taking the all-electric plunge, with a lot of concerns circling around range limitations and anxiety. So what they’ve done is gone out and proven that there’s no reason to be so worried, because an I-Pace can drive the whole way from London to Brussels, contending with traffic and the Channel crossing, with range to spare.

“We know customers won’t compromise on everyday usability so we engineered our electric performance SUV to deliver outstanding real-world range. By driving the 369km from London to Brussels on a single charge – and arriving with plenty of range left – we’ve demonstrated how comfortably it deals with long-distance journeys.” — Stephen Boulter, Vehicle Integration Manager (I-Pace), Jaguar

Boulter himself was behind the wheel of the I-Pace through the run, where he had to contend with European summer heat (har har) and rush-hour traffic, ideal conditions to demonstrate real-world usability. Critically though, there was one difference between this run from London to Brussels: They didn’t take the train under the English Channel, they drove through it.

For the uninitiated, most cross the Channel between Folkestone and Calais in the train, meaning an electric car would save the 50km of range. However for the run, Jaguar arranged to have the I-Pace drive through the service tunnel that runs between the two train lines under the Channel. Emerging in Calais, the I-Pace’s intelligent navigation plotted the most energy-efficient route between the tunnel and the final destination in Brussels, taking into account topography and traffic, allowing Jaguar’s first full-electric car to arrive there with 8% charge to spare.

Of course, it won’t be a ‘range challenge’ every time you leave the house. With a WLTP-certified electric range of 369km on a single charge, the I-Pace packs more than enough juice in its 90kWh battery to fulfil most daily requirements. Further, the I-Pace comes ready with the ability to recharge from 0%-80% on a public 100kW DC fast-charger in just 40mins, with 100km of range topped up in the first 15mins. And your regular 7kW AC wallbox charger for home can recharge the I-Pace in about 10-hours.
