Jaguar has announced that owners of the I-PACE will be getting an early Christmas present in the form of a complimentary software update which will give them more real-world range, claims the brand.
The British marque has taken the invaluable insights garnered from their experience in motorsports to enhance the I-PACE’s all-electric powertrain, as a result it’s able to extract an additional 20km of range from its battery pack.
To jog your memory, back in 2018 Jaguar created the I-PACE eTrophy series which was the world’s first all-electric production based international race series. “The Jaguar I-PACE eTrophy has generated a huge amount of data for us to analyse and those marginal gains, derived from competition on the track, are now being applied to customers’ cars to further enhance their driving experience. The new software updates optimise the powertrain control systems to improve efficiency and allow I-PACE drivers to travel even further on a single charge without any hardware changes – it really is a case of the vehicle getting better with age” said Stephen Boulter, I-PACE Vehicle Engineering Manager,
Jaguar have claimed several other improvements aside from range extension such as changes made to the all-wheel drive system’s torque distribution when driving in ECO mode. Furthermore, greater use of active radiator vanes help keep the battery cool while prioritising aerodynamic efficiency. The latest update allows the battery to run down to lower power levels “without affecting driveability, durability and performance”.
Apart from the knowledge gathered from motorsports, Jaguar's engineers have also analysed the data from over 80 million kilometres of real-world journeys to improve performance and efficiency.
As a result, the I-PACE’s regenerative braking has been recalibrated to harvest energy more efficiently. Additionally, the updated range calculator’s algorithm gives drivers a more accurate and consistent estimate of the vehicles range.
The brand says these changes can be affected by simply heading down to a Jaguar dealership and getting your I-PACE updated for free, no mechanical changes are made. The latest software also enables an improved over-the-air update system meaning more in-car functionality without a trip to the dealership.
