Kia pulled the covers off what can only be described as an interesting insight into the company’s styling direction at the 2019 China International Import Expo happening in Shanghai.

While the Kia Futuron concept exhibits motor show levels of futurism, it isn’t as outlandish as you might think. For example, the brand is showcasing an SUV with a ‘low-profile’ coupe-esque shape along with a reinterpretation of its ‘tiger nose’ front fascia and cluster lighting design. It wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination to see these cues on Kias in the near future.

The Futuron is a strong statement of how Kia intends its future cars to look like. In this case, it’s a coupe-bodied SUV that features a ‘360-degree core’ design language that’s notable for its smooth flowing lines and is devoid of ornamentation resulting in a sleek, aerodynamic profile.

Complementing the (obviously) fully-electric concept’s funky-yet-minimalist styling is the new ‘tiger face’ design which as the marque says, is a reinterpretation of the ‘tiger nose’ grille that’s been on Kia cars for over a decade now. First seen on the Imagine by Kia Concept, the ‘tiger face’ is likely to be incorporated in upcoming Kia cars.

Given the ‘tiger face’ has a much wider shape, the grille also incorporates the Futuron’s headlights called ‘Star Cloud’ which is meant to give it a “dazzling night time identity”. ‘Star Cloud’ is also incorporated into the rear taillight design. Additionally, the lighting clusters front and rear is said to emulate scales of a dragon from Chinese mythology.

Inside, it’s business as usual for a concept car of this nature. The dragon skin motif is also applied to the door panels with the rest of the interior looking as minimalist as the exterior. The two front seats are made of flexible materials and can either be in an upright driving or reclined position.

The concept also features technology like a graphical user interface operated by artificial intelligence and a level 4 autonomous driving system with Lidar sensors.
