Famed SUV manufacturer Lamborghini recently lobbed an interesting concept car out toward the viewing public recently called the Huracan Sterrato. Upon first glance, it can be summarised as a slightly jacked up a ruggedised mid-engine supercar with a tinge of both law enforcement and post-apocalyptic motifs.
It was a good giggle and bold experiment in mixing of automotive genres, and it did end there for the most part. So we sighed a sigh of contentment for the amusement supplied and moved on. However, crazy as it may sound, Sant’Agata could actually be bringing this wacky SUVpercar into production.
At least, that’s the informed journalistic view of Automobile, who says that Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, was quite keen to talk about the possibility of the marque bringing this into catalogue, suggesting that its very likely they can build the Sterrato at a profit should it be proven that there is demand.
To keep costs down, the extra bits that would visually differentiate the car from any vanilla Huracan - such as the claddings, ducts, and splitters - could be produced via 3D printer using a proprietary lightweight synthetic material, ready to be bolted or screwed onto the body.
While the Urus is clearly more SUV than sports car, the Sterrato is a Huracán with the abilities of a crossover,” said Reggiani. To ensure steady sales, the Audi-owned automaker does plan to introduce a new and fresh variant of the Huracan every year until its replacement takes over in around 2024, and indeed this could be one of the first to be approved.
Should that come to pass, Lamborghini could be expected to produce between 500 and 1,000 examples overall. And aside from already featuring all-wheel drive and a raised ride height, the Sterrato could be the second car in their stable to use the Sabbia, Terra, and Neve drive modes first seen on the Urus.
The sheer prospect of an Italian mid-engine V10 outback rally monster surely does tickle the fancies of many. And that alone may be enough proof that they probably couldn’t make enough of these if the project is green lit for production.
