True, a new McLaren P1 is the sort of car you'd expect at the Goodwood Festival of Speed - but not in 2018. After all, the hybrid hypercar first made its debut in 2013. However, this P1 is quite special as it’s made by fabled engineering outfit Lanzante.
Called the P1 GT, it’s the latest creation from the same firm who were previous responsible for the iconic F1 GT Longtail from 1997 that were made to meet homologation requirements to field the McLaren F1 GTR in endurance racing championships.
Most recently, Lanzante showed off the P1 LM, a stripped out version of the P1 that was focused purely for the track. And this P1 GT, shown for the first time at the 2018 cycle of the Goodwood FoS, bares quite a few nods to that predecessor.
One of the most obvious changes made over the standard McLaren P1 is the new aerodynamic treatment, the most prominent specific change being the fixed wing and elongated tail. Unsurprisingly, this has lead this GT to also bear the ‘Longtail’ moniker, though not in an official capacity like McLaren have done with the 600LT - another car being shown at the ongoing Goodwood festival.
No specifications have been provided just yet, unfortunately, but figuring how the P1 LM’s hybrid powertrain was left untouched from the standard car, perhaps Lanzante has again shied away from improving on Woking’s finest.
Should that be the case, the new ‘Longtail' would have 673kW of thrust delivered from its combination of 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 and electric motor. However, should it be endowed with the uprated powertrain package from the P1 GTR, it would mean an output as high as 736kW. Perhaps an indication of this is the new quad exhaust exists.
