The 2019 Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition has been host to more than just model premiers such as the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic but also the unveiling of brand firsts such as Lexus unwrapping its first-ever fully-electric car in the form of the UX 300e crossover.
Electrification is hardly a new concept to the Japanese automaker considering they’ve been producing hybrid-electric vehicles since 2005. However, this battery-electric vehicle (BEV) will be their first production car under the Lexus Electrified banner.
The UX 300e produces 150kW of power and 300Nm of torque from its electric motor that’s fed by a 54.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack. When tested on the NEDC cycle, it was shown to have a range of 400km.
Charging up its depleted battery pack from a 50kW DC fast charger will only take 50 minutes while a 6.6kW AC household socket will take seven hours, says the brand. Like most EVs, the Lexus UX 300e has multiple battery monitoring systems to regulate charging and prevent overcharging.
In terms of looks, the 300e looks (almost) no different to any other conventionally-powered Lexus UX, save for the electric badging of course. Inside, it’s pretty much the same story as the exterior, the only thing that’s changed is the instrument cluster and touchscreen displaying charge and range information.
