As a result of the global coronavirus pandemic, almost every event across the board has either been cancelled or postponed, which is a bummer for us motorsports fans who've been eager to see the 2020 season kicked off proper. Naturally, the 2020 season of the Formula One World Championship is currently on hold, meaning its drivers are on idle as well.
That said, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing fame reckons he’s found the perfect avenue to channel his combativity – the Australian Supercar Eseries. The Championship formerly known as V8 Supercars, has also taken a leave of absence from the race track and has spent the ‘opportunity’ to introduce its Eseries. The Dutchman joined up with the Red Bull Holden Racing team alongside Shane van Gisbergen, both of whom race each other online often.
Max – who’s a delving ever deeper into sim racing – will be getting behind the wheel of a virtual 5.0-litre V8-powered Red Bull Holden which sports his RB16 Formula One car livery. The iRacing-based competition will see the Dutchman compete against professional drivers in the second round of the Aussie Supercars All-Stars Eseries.
Max took part in four races total: two at Silverstone, UK and two at Circuit de Catalunya, Spain. In a seven-lap race of Silverstone, he climbed his way to the front from sixth to finish second. The second race at Silverstone saw the grid reversed and Max was consigned to the 25th spot on the virtual grid. He was then caught in a pile up which saw him lose his rear wing. In the end, he finished 18th.
The third race and the first in Barcelona – over 8 laps – saw Max climb the rung from sixth to second after the front field tried to squeeze him out. While in second place, Max kept up the pressure on the front runner who also happens to be his team mate. The Red Bull boys finished first and second.
The fourth and final race of the day, which was also the longest race of the quartet at 11 laps, saw the top spot of the podium elude Max once again. The Dutchman led the high-speed tussle but conceded the front spot to his team mate who made his fresher tyres count. The duo completed the race in the same one-two finish as before.
“It was a lot of fun driving in the Supercars races today and it was very hectic. We got some good results in the end as well which I didn’t expect. To finish second three times is not bad at all and to get two 1-2 finishes for Red Bull with Shane is really good. We worked very well together, especially in the final race with our strategy,” said Verstappen afterwards.
