We’ve written quite a lot about the Mazda CX-9 and its arrival into the Australian market, even written about possible indicative pricing for when it does hit showrooms. And now Mazda Australia has announced pricing for the second-generation large SUV.
For a start, at $42,490, the Sport FWD comes in at a lower price point than the model it replaces – undercutting the older Classic base model by $1,280. And starting with the Sport variant, they will be accompanied in order of price by the Touring, GT, and range-topping Azami. Each variant will be offered with their front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Following the base FWD variant, the price increases by $4,000 when fitted with Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system. That four-wheel traction is a price premium that repeats throughout the CX-9 range.
Mazda is also quick to point out the new CX-9’s generous amount of standard equipment, but hasn’t outlined exactly which features go where in the range. However, kit such as their i-ACTIVESENSE safety suite such as Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake, Lane Keep Assist, Smart Brake Support, Driver Attention Alert, and Adaptive LED headlamps will make it to top spec Azami.
All CX-9s will be powered by Mazda’s all-new 2.5-litre direct-injection turbocharged SkyActiv four-cylinder petrol engine that outputs 170kW and 420Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic. It will come standard with fuel sipping tech such as idle stop/start and i-Eloop energy recovery.
Mazda claims it can hit consumption numbers as low as 8.4-litres/100km for the front-driven variants while all-wheel drive units can expect 8.8-litres/100km – an improvement of roughly 25 percent over the 3.5/3.7-litre V6 engine in the previous CX-9. They also say that this will make it the “most economical seven-seater petrol model in its class.”
Alastair Doak, marketing director of Mazda Australia, said: The Brand-New Mazda CX-9’s value proposition is a strong one,” said Mazda Australia marketing director Alastair Doak. Starting from $42,490 plus on roads, each grade offers something unique, we expect Brand-New Mazda CX-9 will appeal to a broad buyer group,”
“When you consider the seven-seater SUV options available on the market, this is affordable luxury. I think we can now safely say that the Mazda CX-9 offers a premium ownership and driving experience without the price tag.”
