Mazda CX-8 Lineup Refreshed For 2020, Five New Variants Starting From $40k

Previously, only 3 variants of the Mazda CX-8 were available in Australia, and comprised of two Sport variants with and without all-wheel drive and the range topping Asaki AWD. All three were available with a diesel motor only. For 2020, that isn’t really the case anymore.

Five additional variants have been added to the lineup including a petrol engine, with prices starting from $39,910. Mazda has added those variants to in between the book ends of the Sport and Asaki, which are the Touring and GT-spec variants.

The petrol engine is found in base-spec of the Sport and Touring variants. The engine in question here in the brand’s 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G naturally-aspirated unit which produces 140kW and 252Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via the SkyActiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission.

Should buyers desire an all-wheel drive flavoured CX-8, then diesel is the only way to go. The oil-burner under the bonnet is the familiar 2.2-litre turbodiesel SkyActiv-D which makes 140kW like its petrol sibling but produces 450Nm of torque.

In terms of equipment, the entire CX-8 lineup gets a refreshed version of Mazda’s AEB system called Smart City Brake Support which now gets night time pedestrian protection and an 8-inch dash display with larger fonts and icons for better readability.

The Touring variant and above gets third-row functionality thanks to it’s one touch walk-in switch on the left and right seat cushion sides on the second row. The seats then fold down with a single touch. Speaking of the third row, the GT and Asaki get USB ports back there as well. Both those variants add an electric sunroof to the mix.
