And it’ll be debuting where it all started – Chicago.
It was three decades ago when Mazda, a plucky Japanese brand that put engineering above all else (and still largely does), unveiled a small drop-top sports car that would reignite the interest & demand for such vehicles. Called the MX-5, there was little telling before the launch how it’d be received in the US or indeed globally; But once the veil was pulled, there was no stopping it.
All these years later, Chicago will once again play host to the unveiling of an MX-5, though rather than blaze the way, the new model will serve as a nostalgic throwback to the times of yore when the MX-5 was new, and paint was traditionally solid and roofs were canvas.
We mention those two things because judging by the sole teaser image Mazda’s released, we can conclude two things: First, that the 30th Anniversary Edition will come in the form of the Mazda MX-5 RF and not the roadster. Second, that it’ll mark the return of Classic Red, the original hue that the MX-5 was offered in back in 1989, which since made way for the ‘Soul Red’ we’re all familiar with now.
It looks like an aesthetic treatment more than anything else so, in addition to the colour, expect to find some new wheels (which will likely be black, from what we can tell from the photo if we squint).
