Japanese carmaker Mazda has casually begun teasing its new Mazda3 hatch & saloon ahead of its launch, despite the fact that this car might lead a revolution within the car industry, and renew efforts to keep internal-combustion alive. The new 3 is rumoured to pack a Skyactiv-X compression-ignition engine under the bonnet, which would give it diesel-levels of frugality without the inherent lack of refinement & responsiveness.

But at this point, that remains speculative.

It is known however that the new 3 will utilise Skyactiv-X architecture, designed to accommodate the new compression-ignition engines. Should they not be available at launch, we expect to see them later on in the 3’s life cycle.

What’s clear to see is that the new 3 has been heavily-influenced by the Kai concept from 2017, with its pared-back lines and bolder interpretation of Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language. Mazda themselves say that the new 3 will feature a “richer interpretation” of Kodo, which to us, means that it’ll look more in line with the latest cars from Mazda.

With such great emphasis on the Kai’s influence on the design of the new 3, we can’t help but wonder what’s going on in the cabin. The Kai concept had a very pared-back, minimalist cabin which was certainly gorgeous when we saw it at last years’ Tokyo Motor Show, which we would love to see make it into production.

Right now, very little more has been confirmed about the new Mazda 3, so we’ll have to wait for the LA Motor Show to get more details. But in the meantime, be sure to stay tuned to CarShowroom as we bring you more updates as they come.
