Mazda has a big unveil planned for the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show in mid November - the 16th to be exact - where it the all-new CX-5 will breaking cover.
From the dark teaser image Mazda released for the upcoming mid-size crossover, there’s little doubt that the new second-generation CX-5 will be sporting a sleeker body with more angularity, an evolution of their KODO Soul of Motion design philosophy.
If one remembers, the CX-5 ushered in Mazda’s new visual style upon its release in 2012, preceded by the MINAGI Concept of the year which would evolve into the production crossover we know today.
From the little we can see of it, traces of the smaller but newer CX-3 are evident, and could be imagined as more or less an enlarged version of that since we have nothing else to draw from.
We do not know what sorts of powertrain, convenience, or safety technologies will be accompanying the model premiere in Southern California next month, but we reckon the next CX-5 will be powered by the same batch of engines found in the current crop of Mazdas.
It’s quite unlikely that they will choose to shove their most powerful 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G 2.5T engine - which debuted in the CX-9 - into the smaller CX-5, although that would be a very interesting development.
Expect a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated SkyActiv-G metro motor to be occupying the engine well along with the 1.5-litre SkyActiv-D. An updated version of Mazda’s MZD Connect infotainment hardware and software suite would also be a nice addition.
