Mazda Australia has announced a series of updates for its flagship SUV, the CX-9. The 2020 car boosts improved safety, comfort, functionality and technology, said the Japanese car manufacturer.

All variants of the CX-9 will get a new version of Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) software. The system uses the brakes to control and stabilises the car back into a straight line when coming out of a corner. The company says, “the result is steering that is not only safer but also puts the driver at ease, providing a more connected feeling.”

CX-9’s equipped with an all-wheel drive system will get the latest iteration of Mazda’s Off-Road Traction Assist which helps when driving on slippery and undulating roads, and works by finely adjusting the stability control program.

Rounding off the updates regarding safety is their improved Adaptive LED Headlights, which they say offers up better illumination without dazzling other road users. Speaking of the dark, Mazda also says they’ve improved night driving with the addition of an advanced automatic braking system that detects pedestrians in the dark.

Elsewhere, the electric parking brake also gets an Auto Hold function. Mazda says it will hold the vehicle stationary and will not let it ‘creep’ forward even if your foot is off the brake and in gear.

Inside the CX-9, the centre infotainment screen has now grown to 9-inches. The third-row of seats gets better access by means of implementing a kid-reachable switch that tilts the middle seat forward. USB ports have also been added to improve third-row functionality.

Outside, higher trim levels of the CX-9 will get a “hands-free tailgate that allows customers to open and close the boot using a simple kick gesture”. The brand has also revised the large SUV’s alloy wheel designs which ranges from 18 to 20-inches in diameter, depending on the trim level.

Speaking of trim levels, Mazda has decided to simplify things a tad. The range topper will be the Azami and not the Azami LE. That trim line will receive higher-quality Nappa leather seat upholstery and will be offered in two colour options namely: Walnut Brown and Pure White.
