GVC, refinement, and more safety kit headline the Mazda2’s 2017 update.

In a first for the segment, the Mazda2 will be offered with an expanded list of advanced safety and driver assist features, a larger variant range which now includes the base Neo and new range-topping GT, and the marque’s G-Vectoring Control (GVC). Prices are unchanged.

This is the first major update Mazda has issued to their 2, in the same vein of the recent spec-bump of the Mazda3. To make the 2 a better drive, the GVC is supported by a some revised suspension components: new bushings, front and rear dampers, and a recalibrate electronic power  steering system.

NVH levels have also improved thanks to more sound deadening material applied throughout, particularly to block sound and vibrations from the engine bay and the luggage compartment from entering the cabin.

In the safety department, Mazda is pushing more and more tech from their i-ActiveSense suite down to more accessible price points. First of all, Smart City Brake Support (AEB) is now standard across the entire range. The system can even prevent collisions while in reverse with the Maxx variant and up.

Meanwhile, the higher-spec Genki and GT gain Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. All Mazda2s also receive interior and exterior updates, including redesigned side mirrors with integrated indicators, a new steering wheel, new cloth designs and a colour Active Driving Display on the GT and Genki variants.

The 1.5-litre four-cylinder SkyActiv-G petrol motor remains, churning out 79kW and 139Nm at their respective peaks. Fuel economy start from an impressive 4.9-litre/100km, and since only the base Neo lacks the ‘i-stop’ idle stop/start system, real world economy could match the claimed figure more often than not for most buyers.
