But it has nothing on the VW I.D. Buzz in terms of cool.
German carmaker Mercedes-Benz has announced that they’ll be bringing an EQV concept electric van to the Geneva motor show, as a display of how wide the EQ family of zero-emissions electric vehicles could be once fully fleshed-out. The EQV is described as a ‘near-series study,’ suggesting that the major engineering & packaging obstacles have been surmounted, and that the project itself is now only subject to market sentiment.
The EQV, if green-lit for production, will join the EQA compact hatch, EQB compact crossover, and EQS full-size limousine, all four of which will come after the EQC debutant. Boardmember Wilfried Porth describes the EQV as the “next big statement” for the class, though if he meant that literally or figuratively, we do not know.
It won’t be Mercedes-Benz’s first all-electric van though, having already launched the eVito & eSprinter models last year. That said, those offerings are strictly commercial, and they’re hampered by a 150km range per full charge. That’s probably why Mercedes themselves market them as ‘last mile delivery solutions.’
But the new EQV will be built by the same division though, that being Mercedes-Benz Commercial. And like the existing V-Class van, the EQV will share a lot of similarities with more conventional commercial offerings, including its chassis architecture, eschewing the bespoke electric platform that the EQ lineup will predominantly be based on. We can only wonder if the EQV will offer the same range as the V-Class, with three lengths, multiple interior configurations, and even a campervan.
