Happy birthday, big G!

2020 Mercedes-Benz G400d – Stronger Than Time Edition

It’s been 40-years since the original Gelendewagen first came out, and so Mercedes-Benz is marking the occasion by offering up special editions of their venerable G-Wagen. They’re called the ‘Stronger Than Time’ Editions and while the name is certainly facetious, the cars themselves most certainly are not.

The STT Editions (which is what we’ll refer to them as) are available as either a G400d or G500, with the former packing a 3.0-litre straight-6 oiler making 246kW and 700Nm, while the latter packs a 4.0-litre petrol V8 with 314Kw and 610Nm. Power very obviously goes to all-four wheels via an 8-speed auto & 4Matic system.

STT cars get AMG-Line trim as standard, and so there are the flared wheel arches, the AMG bumpers, badged brake callipers, and even a sports exhaust for the V8. You also get the ‘Stainless Steel Pack’ which throws in running boards, spare-wheel cover, door sills, and even a loading sill at the rear. You also get the Night Package thrown in, meaning smoked lights, mirror caps, and spare-wheel ring, while the design elements in the bumpers are finished in black.

Further kit includes the Driving Assistance Pack, adaptive dampers, surround-view cameras, Multibeam LED headlights, Active Multicontour seats, a full Bermester audio system, 64-hue ambient lighting, a powered sunroof (with auto-close if it rains), and even an obstruction sensor.

Uniquely, STT cars get a corresponding badge on the A-pillar, as well as leather-wrapped grab handles (front seat, roof). The instrument panel on the other hand gets wrapped in soft Nappa leather.

If you want to truly celebrate the G, then you’ve got to get the AMG G63 Stronger Than Time. That (obviously) makes use of a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 from Affalterbach putting out 436kW and 850Nm, and benefits from additional dark-chrome exterior bits, and matte-chrome on the running boards, exhaust tips, mirror caps, and others.
