Mercedes-Benz has unveiled yet another stunner – this time the new SLK 55 AMG.
Under the bonnet is another technological masterpiece in the form of a 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 (based on the bi-turbo V8), with maximum power of 315kW at 6800rpm and peak torque of 540Nm at 4500rpm. But, with AMG-designed cylinder shut-off and auto start/stop, fuel consumption is impressively low at 8.4l/100kms.
Featuring an all-alloy crankcase and high-pressure direct injection at 200bar, this new ‘Benz-AMG engine – code-numbered M152 - revs to 7000rpm. There’s also a new AMG sports exhaust system with flaps which remain closed below 2000rpm for a quiet, muffled sound but progressively open to deliver the raucous, hard-working V8 sound one associates with high-performance AMG-tuned Mercedes’.
Drive is to the rear wheels via and AMG Speedshift-plus 7G-Tronic transmission with three driver-select modes (‘Efficiency’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Manual’).
Underneath is an AMG sports suspension set-up with 3-stage ESP, Torque Vectoring Brakes and AMG Direct-Steer.
The superbly-styled, new Mercedes-Benz SLK gets the full AMG treatment with a large front spoiler, LED DRLs, a wider front grille, darkened clear lense headlights, chrome-plated front fender vents, side sills, rear diffuser and body-colour bootlid spoiler.
Inside is more AMG goodies including an IWC design clock, sports steering wheel, AMG instruments, lots of brushed aluminium and AMG sports seats.
On the options list from the AMG Performance Studio are desirable inclusions such as ‘Designo’ leather, carbon fibre or black piano lacquer for the centre console, various designs of 18-inch alloy wheels and a superb AMG Performance steering wheel with Alcantara grips.
The latest model is the third generation AMG SLK.
