But only just.

2018 Mercedes-Benz A250 4Matic

Mercedes-Benz has announced the specifications and pricing of its A250 4Matic hatchback ahead of its arrival next month, providing intimate details about what we can expect to see when the range-topping variant arrives. It will join the A200 with which it shares a lot of its equipment list, except in one specific area.

That specific area is the drivetrain: The A250 provides 165kW and 350Nm of motivation, which is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for maximum performance and versatility. The century sprint takes just 6.2-seconds to complete, while official rated fuel consumption stands at a miserly 6.6L/100km.

The 4Matic system that the A250 will come with as standard will increase grip tremendously, no doubt. The system can send up to 50% of the available torque rearwards, though power remains solely on the front wheels most of the time. Also unique to the A250 is the rear suspension setup, which eschews the torsion-beam setup of the A200 in favour of a more sophisticated 4-link setup instead.

Exterior differentiators will be minimal: Like the A200, the A250 4Matic will ride on 18-inch alloys and feature LED headlights with high-beam assistance. It’ll also enjoy the same dual-10.25” screens inside running MBUX software, in addition to other features like keyless entry/go, and wireless phone charging.

The A250 4Matic will be safe, too. You’ll get 9-airbags, AEB, lane-keep assists and blind-spot monitoring, as well as traffic-sign recognition and a backup camera. Not bad when taken altogether, eh?

The A250 4Matic will only be available for a limited period, or so the notice from Mercedes-Benz Australia goes. When the entry-level A180 and hotted-up Mercedes-AMG A35 arrive in 2019, they will be making changes to the A-Class range to better suit local tastes. But in the meantime, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class range will consist of the A200 ($47,200) and the A250 4Matic ($49,500) and that’ll be the end of that.
