2018 E-Class Coupe to complete the E-Class family, will spawn full-fat AMG variant.
The E-Class coupe is a hotly-anticipated car. With the previous generation bagging design awards before it went on sale, the new car has big shoes to fill. Unsurprisingly, Mercedes-Benz has taken a less radical approach to the design of the new car. Where the outgoing E-Class coupe was distinctively an E-Class, the new one looks like another Mercedes-Benz sports car.
We can say this with confidence now, because Mercedes-Benz has released a video teasing the new car and some highlight design features. It can now be confirmed that it’ll feature headlights similar to those of its sedan sibling, slim rear lights like the rest of Stuttgart’s coupe brethren, and a profile that will have even the biggest anorak squinting to differentiate it from the S-Coupe and C-Coupe.
The outgoing E-Class coupe was, underneath, based on the contemporary C-Class. However, the new car will be underpinned by the same basic architecture as the E-Class saloon and estate, which will allow it to gain a full-on AMG variant sometime after its launch. We published a report on this earlier in fact, after receiving confirmation of an AMG E50 variant to top the E-Class coupe lineup.
The AMG E-Class Coupe will sit alongside the existing AMG-tuned E-Class variants, namely the E63 and E63 S. The more powerful of the two V8’s produces an immense 450kW of twist with 850Nm of pull, and will rocket the saloon from rest to 100km/h in just 3.4-seconds, with the ‘lesser’ model doing the same sprint in 3.5-seconds. The AMG E50 coupe will be powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six engine with 300kW/500Nm, according to an Autocar report.
