Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) have just announced the refreshed 2020 ASX range which is headlined by the (almost) range-wide fitment of the brand’s safety suite, powertrain and two new sport-themed variants starting from $24,990.
The third-generation ASX receives its most comprehensive facelift since it was outed almost a decade ago. Noteworthy changes to this iteration include the new front fascia that employs the brand’s ‘Dynamic Shield’ design language which incorporates new bumpers, fog lamps, headlights and grille. The rear-end gets a subtler refresh with new LED tail lamps and a skid plate insert under the bumper.
Here’s the rundown. The base-spec ES gets an 8-inch touchscreen that dishes out infotainment featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio. It also gets single zone climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control and electric folding wing mirrors.
One step above is the LS-spec which adds privacy glass, chrome door handles, roof rails, smart key and push start ignition. The Exceed adds a panoramic roof, self-levelling headlights, heated and powered leather seats, Rockford audio system and a TomTom satnav.
Apart from the addition of two new variants – the MR and GSR – safety technology is the ASX’s headliner. An electrochromatic rear view mirror and Forward Collision Mitigation system is standard throughout the range. Going a step further, Mitsubishi has fitted every variant with its ADAS safety suite sans the base model ES variant, however the suite can be applied for an additional $2,500.
Included in the suite are features such lane departure warning, auto high beam, reverse sensors, blind spot warning, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, rain sensing wipers and dusk sensing headlights. Moreover, the ASX was constructed on Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) passive safety architecture.
In terms of powertrains, the ASX Exceed and GSR variants will benefit from the brand’s 2.4-litre engine as seen in the Outlander for example. It produces 123kW and 222Nm as compared to the 2.0-litre block found in the rest of the range that puts out 110kW and 197Nm. Active Stability Control is standard across the board. A 5-speed manual is offered in the base ES while the rest of the range receives a CVT transmission.
Finally, the newest additions to the ASX range, are the MR and GSR variants. The MR sits just above the base-spec ES. It gets blacked-out alloy wheels, door mirrors and front grille. It also gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, park brake with red stitching, smart key and push start. The GSR-spec adds the 2.4-litre engine, paddle shifters, faux leather and suede seats, six-speaker stereo and a rear spoiler.
Mitsubishi Motors Australia has yet to release the pricing on the MR and GSR variants which is slated to arrive in December.
