Indications of interest higher than outgoing-gen’s annual sales figure.
The clues are pretty clear to see: Japanese carmaker Suzuki has a definite winner on its hands in the new Jimny, the small overlander that’s as tough as nails and wrapped up in ever-so-trendy retro-mod looks. The Jimny’s rough-and-ready appeal is significant, even in the UK: It seems some 4,500 have already indicated their interest in the new car on Suzuki UK’s website, exceeding the previous-generation Jimny’s annual sales figure by a very large margin.
Brand boss Dave Wyatt told Autocar that the amount of interest (150% higher than the old Jimny’s annual sales figure, mind) racked up for the model is very exciting, but leads to another problem. The sales for the new Jimny in Japan, according to Wyatt, has been “staggering,” which suggests that UK supply (and potentially global supply of the little SUV) may be squeezed until the Jimny’s home market is adequately serviced.
Wyatt says that for the UK, his office is working to secure 1,100 cars for the first year, before nearly doubling that figure to 2,000 Jimny’s a year in the second year on the market. With the Australian market hungry for all the SUVs it can get its hands on, we can only wonder how we’re going to devour the new Jimny on its arrival in Q1 2019, and if our interest in the model will result in a bit of a supply pinch.
