Nissan has today launched the diesel TL variant of the X-Trail, one of Australia’s most impressive SUVs in its segment, packing an all-new 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that replaces the 1.6-litre oiler that was previously available for the model.

Paired exclusively with Nissan’s excellent X-Tronic CVT gearbox (one of the best in the business), the 2.0-litre mill puts all of its 130kW and 380Nm to all four wheels, representing a 35% increase in power and 20% improvement in torque over the smaller oiler that used to come with the X-Trail.

The diesel comes in TS and TL guises, with the former sitting in the middle of the X-Trail range with the latter taking place as the flagship of the lineup. The 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol mills will continue to be offered, with the 106kW/200Nm former available with a six-speed manual, whilst the larger 2.5-litre with its 126kW/226Nm will also be paired exclusively with the X-Tronic CVT transmission.

“There is still an appetite for diesel, and offering a diesel engine is not only important for us, but for Nissan X-Trail buyers. Since the May update, the X-Trail range has sold well, and with the base-model TS diesel available available since June, we are excited to have the full diesel range on sale now.” — Stephen Lester, Managing Director, Nissan Australia

As befits a flagship variant, the TL comes with a whole suite of kit, like a smattering of airbags, dynamic vehicle control, forward collision warning, and ISOFIX anchors. The TL also gets blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning, and intelligent emergency braking replete with pedestrian detection (shared with the Ti petrol).

As far as on-board tech goes, there’s plenty to play with. There’s a 360º surround-view camera system, satellite navigation, and a choice between black or tan leather for the cabin. What’s interesting to note is the inclusion of AEB but the omission of adaptive cruise control, which is available on the Ti petrol variant.
