Not too long ago, we brought you news of Nissan’s refreshed full-sized SUV, the Patrol, being shown at its global premier in Abu Dhabi. Nissan Australia has swiftly brought it to our shores and is on sale here in two guises namely the Ti and Ti-L costing $75,990 and $91,990 respectively.

The 2020 Patrol lands here with the major facelift it rightly deserves. One of the biggest changes made is the marque’s latest design language applied to both ends.

Up front it employs the brand’s new V-Motion grille flanked by boomerang-shaped daytime running lights and LED headlights. The bumper too has been refreshed to what Nissan refers to as “more premium” (in Ti-L guise) by the addition of chrome trimming. We’ll let you decide if it accomplishes that.

The rear end wasn’t left out of the refresh and now sports rear boomerang-shaped LED taillights bridged by a chrome bar bearing the model’s name. The Patrol also debuts sequential rear indicators, a first for the automaker.

On the inside the Patrol remains largely unchanged from the pre-facelift. The Middle-Eastern launch-spec model showed off a larger secondary screen below the usual 8-inch display which replaces the button-centric layout. The Australian specification of the Patrol will not be receiving that secondary touchscreen which also featured Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Perhaps Nissan Australia will offer it in the future.

Sadly, the Aussie-spec model will not be receiving the diamond-stitch quilted leather seats and the hand-stitched leather-wrapped steering like that found on the Middle-Eastern version. Bummer.

That aside, the Patrol does get the updated HVAC system, providing occupants with better airflow especially for the rear passengers. Furthermore, the system is enhanced for quicker cooling, great for hot climates.

Locally the Patrol will have its powertrain carried over from the pre-facelift model which is a 5.6-litre V8 unit with 298kW of power and 560Nm of twist mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Control. For better road holding, the body-on-frame SUV is fitted with Hydraulic Body Motion Control, a dampening system technology developed for full-size SUVs to reduce leaning while cornering to improve chassis control and ride comfort – especially off-road.

The new Patrol packs the Nissan Intelligent Mobility safety suite which includes the Intelligent (autonomous) Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection and Intelligent Forward Collision Warning System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, Blind Spot Intervention, Blind Sport Warning and Intelligent Cruise Control. It also gets an electronic rear diff lock, Hill Decent Control, Hill Start Assist and an off-road monitor.

There is a rather big price gulf between the Ti and Ti-L variants and it’s more than just looks. The range-topper will receive premium add-ons such as a power-operated tailgate, electric glass tilt and slide sunroof, roof rails, intelligent rearview mirror, second row 8-inch entertainment screens and a 13-speaker Bose stereo system.

The 2020 Nissan Patrol is currently on sale and available in six different colours including Moonlight White, Galaxy Gold and Hermosa Blue which are new to the model. Nissan is also offering it with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty.
