The first generation Peugeot 5008 was introduced 2009 and one thing clear about that model was that it was definitely leaning toward an MPV in terms of shape and purpose. The French marque will be replacing it very soon too, and has released a full batch of photos of the all-new version prior to its debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show with a Aussie introduction slated for mid-2017.
Kai Bruesewitz, General Manager of Peugeot Australia said: “The new year will signal one of the largest product launch periods for Peugeot both locally and abroad, with the potential of three new or revised SUV models joining the Peugeot line-up in Australia. With updated 2008, all-new 3008 and, pending negotiations, all-new 5008, Peugeot will round out its full-range of passenger and SUV vehicles in Australia.”
“For the first time in Peugeot’s history we could offer an SUV derivative of every passenger vehicle line and it demonstrates Peugeot’s commitment to satisfying global model demand while leveraging the vast experience within the PSA Group. While final specifications and model line-up are yet to be confirmed, we are confident of securing the seven-seat 5008 SUV for local sale.”
The first thing that jumps out is the obviously more SUV-esque styling, and its a trend that Peugeot pulled off earlier this year with the new and more masculine 3008. Like that, this has long flat-ish bonnet and a three boxed passenger cell beyond the front fenders. There’s also the increased ride height and, pronounced wheel arches, and ruggedised cladding around the lower perimeter.
Don’t get too drawn into the seemingly rough-ready new shape and visual cues, though, as Peugeot will not be giving it four wheel drive but is instead only available as a front-driven model. That’s a contrast to the 3008 mentioned prior, which the manufacturer has said will be offered with a electric-powered rear wheels in the future.
True to its past as a family mover, the all-new 5008 comes exclusively as a seven seater with dimensions that are 11cm longer from nose to tail and a wheelbase that’s grown to 2.84m over its predecessor.
At the front as well as the rear, the 2017 Peugeot 5008 shares many cues that are identical to the smaller 3008, only enlarged for the higher tier model. This overall expansion has lead to a 1940-litres of boot space with the seats folded and cargo stacked to the taller roof. With the seats up, an ample 1060-litres are still available.
As too with the 3008, the new 5008 is the second car in Peugeot’s refreshed batch of models to feature the next-generation i-Cockpit, which features a cabin and instrument layout that is meant to wrap around the driver. Directly ahead is a 12.3-inch high-resolution display that acts as a virtual instrument cluster. It is further augmented by an 8-inch centrally-mounted infotainment unit display.
The rest of the cabin benefits from Peugeot’s newfound design panache and quality construction, with seats and panel adorned in a combination of leather, Alcantara, and soft touch material.
At launch the 5008 will have an engine line-up that includes many of the motors found in its most recently updated models from the THP petrols and the BlueHDi diesels and will come to Australia in five trim levels: Access, Active, Allure, along with the sportier GT and GT-Line versions.
Inside, the cabin can be specified with comforts such as seats with multi-point massage system, a premium Focal Hi-Fi system, and a panoramic glass roof. In terms of safety, it will come with advanced anti-collision systems such as autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and more.
