Volvo’s electric performance brand, Polestar, who've already given us a peek at the Precept concept back in February, has now revealed more of its future Tesla Model S rival. The Swedish concept is set arrive in the next few years, if you’re wondering.
“People ask me all the time, ‘what is the future of Polestar?’, and of course we are not showing our future models just yet,” comments Thomas Ingenlath. “But Precept shows you where we will be heading – our design direction, our ambitions about sustainability and the great digital user experience we will bring with those future cars. Precept showcases our future, not as a fancy dream or something out of a sci-fi movie. This is our reality, to come.”
The Precept concept is an electric, four-door grand tourer which, as Ingenlath said, previews the way forward for the brand. While the Polestar 1 and Polestar 2 models are heavily influenced by Volvo’s design, the Precept shows the company’s intention of moving away from that design language.
This time though, most of the new information surrounds the interior. Just like the Polestar 2, the Precept will utilise a vegan interior with much of it made from recycled materials such as a flax-based natural composite material which replaces much of the car’s virgin plastic.
Parts of the doors, floor, dashboard and backs of the seats will use ampliTex composites, strengthened by propriety powerRibs technology – which is inspired by leaf veins – which offers up a highly rigid yet lightweight solution. Polestar says that together, they offer up a 50 percent reduction in weight and an 80 percent reduction in plastic waste.
The seat covers are made from a 3D-knitted material that’s made from 100 percent recycled PET bottles. The seat bolsters and head rests use vinyl made from recycled cork and waste from the wine industry. Meanwhile the carpets are woven from reclaimed fishing nets.
Elsewhere in the Precept’s interior is a massive 15-inch portrait-style touchscreen powered by Android and builds on Polestar’s relationship with Google. There’s also 12.5-inch digital instrument cluster display, which is linked by an “illuminated blade” that wraps the interior.
The cabin is fitted with sensors too, including an eye tracking sensor which tracks the driver’s eye position and adjusts the screen to show accordingly and a proximity sensor which adjusts what’s on the screen depending on where the user’s hand is placed.
“Polestar Precept’s aesthetics are rooted in cutting-edge technology rather than looking back in time at historical, automotive references. At Polestar we see technology as an enabler, as a tool to solve our society’s problems and we translated this attitude into a new set of design principles. The combination of sustainable materials and high-tech smart systems opens an entirely new chapter of avant-garde luxury design and shows where Polestar is heading” said Maximilian Missoni, head of Design at Polestar.
