Porsche Cars Australia is already taking orders for the stunning new Boxster Spyder even though local pricing has not been confirmed and the model will not make its world debut until next month.

It’s a sign of where Porsche – now owned by Volkswagen - sees the major market for its superb new soft-top that the Boxster Spyder will be unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show. There was no sign of the newcomer at the Frankfurt Motor Show – Porsche’s home show – a few months back.

Perfect for cruising to Palm Beach, Portsea, Noosa or Cottlesloe Beach. The Boxster Spyder is already prominent on Porsche’s Australian website – six months ahead of local launch.

Be prepared for some surprises with the Boxster which has some throwbacks to the original open-top Porsches built for road races and immortalized by actor James Dean.

For starters there are no interior door handles (you operate the door with seat-belt-material pull handles) and to save weight, air-conditioning is not fitted as standard, it’s an option.

Performance should be startling with power coming from the 3.4-litre version of Porsche’s flat six engine. That means 235kW/370Nm will be on-tap for Boxter Spyder drivers.

Exterior styling also has some cues from previous Spyders – most noticeable is the engine cover with two prominent bulges which blend aerodynamically into the large rear spoiler. The soft top is operated manually and the side windows are smaller than standard Boxters.
