Porsche’s One-Millionth 911 Rolls Off Production Line

Think of what might be the world’s single most prolific sports car and you might land upon the Porsche 911. Spanning seven generations starting in 1963, the seminal rear-engined everyday drivable sports car has had a huge impact in the automotive landscape, and now has crossed the 1 million unit mark.

Porsche has never strayed from the founding concept of the original 911. “But we have continued to enhance the technology of the 911, refining and perfecting the sports car”, says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, “that's why it remains a state-of-the-art and technically innovative vehicle. We have also been able to expand the model line very successfully through derivates”.

Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, who’s seen the 911’s evolution up close, says: "54 years ago, I was able to take my first trips over the Grossglockner High Alpine Road with my father. The feeling of being in a 911 is just as enjoyable now as it was then. That's because the 911 has ensured that the core values of our brand are as visionary today as they were in the first Porsche 356/1 from 1948."

It’s a huge milestone both for the 911 and for Porsche, which up until the Type 993 had been fully hand assembled, that despite its prevalence remains an expensive and relatively low volume car.

The car that’s now known as the millionth 911 is a Carrera S finished in a special ‘Irish Green’ colour and has some choice additions to it that harken back to the original classic era 911 of the 1960s, mostly concentrated on the car’s interior such as the wood trim, exposed metal accents, and cloth seats.

Unlike the air-cooled naturally aspirated flat-six that powered the original 1963 model, the Carrera S here is both water-cooled and twin-turbocharged, using its 3.0-litre displacement to output 310kW and 500Nm.

Expectedly, the millionth 911 will not be sold but rather is to remain under the care of the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen. Going forward, it will be embarking on a world tour, gracing various Porsche events.
